A Guided Prayer for Finding Rest

Prayer

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I will declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.” Psalm 91:1-2 NLT

Intro copy: Are you weary and weighed down? Do you wish the world would stop spinning for just one moment? When the burdens of life press upon you, there is a place of rest for God’s people. Step into the shelter of the Lord and find rest for your soul.

Prayer:

I worship you, God. I declare that you alone are holy. You alone are worthy of praise and I come to you in my very deep need.

I need the world to slow down, God. I need relief from the never-ending busyness of life. My brain is tired; my heart is weary and I desperately need rest. I need a moment, Lord. I need a recess from the cares of this life, a time out from my responsibilities and obligations.

Your word says you promise rest for your people. Your word says you promise refreshing for my weary heart. You offer protection from the storms of life. You are a fortress when I feel battered and bruised and weary.

I long to live in that place, God. I long to live in your shelter—to dwell in that secret place, that holy dwelling of protection and security and care.

And so I come to you, Lord. I step in. I enter your presence... and in Jesus’ name I ask you to cover me, overshadow me, reassure my soul that you are near...

I receive your holy covering. God, I receive your wonderful overshadowing. I can feel you now, settling in upon me, soothing all my frazzled nerves and restoring my tired soul...

In this safe place, I trust you, Lord. I trust you with the cares that have been weighing me down and I lay my heavy burdens down. I let go of everything I’ve been trying to hold together. I trust you with my anxious thoughts and overworked concerns.

Here in your holy presence, I relax. I let down my guard and rest in the refuge of the Lord. You are my hiding place. You are my God. I receive your rest, restoration and renewal.

Thank you, Lord. Thank you for restoring me. Thank you that when the burdens of this world become too much for me, you are there. I am not alone. I am overshadowed.

God – as I go about my work and activities today, help me carry this feeling with me. Teach me how to live my life with the holy sense of your abiding presence. I love you and I love knowing that you are my refuge. You are my rest.
